The Distinguished Young Woman of Iowa for 2019 is Maya Shah, from Clive .

Maya’s achievements include: National merit finalist • 1st place at HOSA state for Human Growth & Development Knowledge test • 1st place at HOSA state for HOSA bowl • Valley Academic Award (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018) • Awarded best poster-Secondary Student Training Program research camp • Working towards high school diploma in music through national guild • 1st place at districts in the IMTA piano competition -2018 • Violin All State Superior rating since 2014 • National Guild piano.- consistent superior plus rating since 2008 • Superior rating at IMTA festival since 2008

In addition, Maya’s activities include: Founder of Valley\'s Peer Partner Music Program • Iowa state president and Valley president of HOSA • Pianist-practice 10 hours each week • Valley\'s world cultures club president • Member of Valley\'s chamber orchestra- practice the violin 5 hrs a week • Member of Tri-M music honors society and a scholar of fine arts • Keyboardist for the Valley musical Oklahoma • Director for DMS5, a STEM speaker series to help raise STEM awareness • 12 years of classical ballet, 8 years of kathak (classical Indian) • Employee at The UPS Store
Play piano at Arbor Springs, a nursing home, for one hour every week. • Teach kids with special needs how to dance for one hour every week. • Tutor kids with Down Syndrome at GiGi's playhouse for two hours every week
